The Shower

Quick Look:

The Shower is a really aesthetically pleasing trick. In the Shower, one hand does only normal Force Bounce throws and the other hand only does short side throws. Even if you know the toss version of the Shower, the bounce version looks and feels slightly different. The bounce version makes the balls move in a triangle, whereas the toss version is more rounded. I also think that the bounce version is faster because you can’t throw higher to give yourself extra time (you’re limited by your height and distance to the ground). While this is a difficult trick, there is a systematic way for learning Shower patterns, so let’s get started!

Step 1: Two Balls at the Same Time

First, you need to practice throwing two balls at the same time. Throw the green ball in your RH with a Force Bounce so that it rises into your LH. At the same time, throw the purple ball in your LH in a short horizontal toss to your RH (Images 1 - 3). Keep practicing this until it feels really solid. You do not have to practice this on both sides at this point. However, once you learn the full trick in one direction, it is a good idea to learn it the other way.

Step 2: Two Balls with Max Dwell Time

Next, you want to practice throwing the short pass from the LH at the last possible moment. Another way to say this is that you want to maximize the dwell time (the amount of time the ball is held in a hand). The max dwell time is depicted in Image 6, although it’s somewhat exaggerated so that you get the idea. Again, practice these two throws until they feel really comfortable.

Step 3: Three Balls

Now, it’s time to put everything together. The Shower pattern is doing the throws you just practiced over and over again (Image 8 - 12). For example, you’ll notice that in Image 9 below, the purple and green balls are thrown simultaneously, and these simultaneous throws occur right before the red ball reaches your LH. If you find yourself struggling, go back to two balls. Once you learn the Shower with your dominant hand, learn it with your non-dominant hand!
